Ideas to games

During 8 months, you will work with colleagues from the world of sound design, animation, illustration, modeling, and creative writing - on your first game!

Through training and support from European and domestic experts, you will learn all about how video games are made.

And perhaps in the end, like most alumni of the Playing Narratives program, you'll find employment in the gaming industry ;)

WHO IS THIS PROGRAM FOR?

We choose participants who are engaged in one of these areas of creative creation:

  • Creative writing
  • Illustration and 2D art
  • 3D art, modeling and animation
  • Sound design and compositing

It is important that you live in Serbia and that you are between 19 and 30 years old. To participate, absolutely no prior knowledge of gaming is required – just a great desire to learn and improve in areas that already interest you.

We especially encourage girls to apply for the program.

Look the aftermovie of the first or second and see how they worked, socialized and created. This year it could be you! Team meetings, lots of workshops and creative challenges await you.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN

During the full eight months of the program, you go through lectures and workshops on carefully selected topics, such as:

  • Gaming history
  • Narrative design
  • Visual naration
  • Character development
  • Game and level design
  • Game art (2D, 3D, animation, modeling…)
  • Business aspects of gaming
  • How the gaming ecosystem works
  • The process of work on the game

In addition to all that, work will also be done on the development of “soft” skills such as team culture and presentation skills.

All lecturers and mentors are leading experts from the domestic gaming industry who already have experience in imparting knowledge and working with young talents. We will combine live and online meetings to be creative and efficient. And guest lectures from leading European countries in the field of development and railways, such as Germany and France, are also waiting for you.

It’s all up to you and your team to come up with, and with the help of mentors and the SGA team, develop your game concepts. All this will happen with well-designed lectures, workshops and lots and lots of practical work in an inspiring environment.

WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM YOU?

During this eight month we expect you to make time for:

  • One online interview to enter the program
  • Live gathering every other week in the center of Belgrade
  • Online sessions with mentors
  • Working with a team – ideally two hours a week

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Thanks to our partners, the entire program is completely FREE for you.

WHAT IS PROVIDED?

  • All live workshops take place in the premises of EU Info Center in Belgrade, where we have a large hall for work and lectures and a terrace for socializing
  • You will meet some of the leading European and domestic experts in the domain of gaming and related disciplines
  • We’ll go to visit big gaming companies
  • You will have free access to all SGA programs that will be implemented by the end of the year
  • You will work with experts from Germany, France and other European countries with a strong gaming industry

In addition, you have a unique opportunity to:

  • Together with your team, you present the game concept to an international jury
  • You get support for further project development after the program ends
  • You become a member of SGA
  • You prepare for eventual professional engagements in the gaming industry

In addition to these specific things, the participants of the previous cycles of Playing Narratives say that one of the most valuable things they took with them were the acquaintances with their peers and the teams they formed.

THIS YEAR’S TOPIC: CLIMATE CHALLENGE

Climate determines every aspect of life on the planet, and the changes that have occurred negatively affect every living thing on Earth. It is therefore crucial that we understand climate change, learn and act on it. What better way is there to communicate these important topics to the new generations than through the medium of games. Everyone can be included in climate action – scientists, artists, policymakers, decision-makers – and even gamers!

This is why this year we are teaming up with the Center for the Promotion of Science (CPN) from Belgrade and its ”Climateurope2” international project, coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. By connecting art and science, CPN will organize public programmes dedicated to climate research in 10 countries of South-East Europe, including five events in collaboration with the SGA and Playing Narratives: in Sarajevo (May), Tirana (June), Kotor (August), Skopje (October), as well as the traditional PN Grand Finale in Belgrade in November.

Scientists involved in the ”Climateurope2” project will prepare special lectures and mentoring sessions for our participants, making sure that their approach to the climate challenges within their game projects is scientifically grounded, innovative and relevant.
