The Power of Play – A Journey through the History of Gameplay

The program strives to make a connection between the field of comics and the field of gaming – Playing Narratives: from comics to games – presents the first activity of The Power of Play by Belgrade’s creative director with extensive experience in the field of gaming Dusan Zica.

This lecture, a kind of “journey through the history of gaming” will be open to the general public and the community, is an ideal introduction to everything that awaits us in the coming months within this unique educational and mentoring program. 23 young creatives from Serbia will have the opportunity to cooperate with each other, but also with leading experts from the industry who come from Germany, France and Serbia.

The lecture will provide an overview of the meaning and perception of games throughout human history, with a review of the historical development and place that some games have in popular culture (directly and through transmedia), from the first desktop RPGs and arcade pioneers to modern PC MOBA and mobile games. Discover how and why we like to play, what games bring us and how computer games have changed the world we live in.

The Playing Narratives program was jointly initiated by the French Institute and the Goethe-Institut in Belgrade, in cooperation with the SGA. The project is supported by the Franco-German Cultural Fund, which was established in 2003 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Elysee Agreement. The fund aims to strengthen Franco-German cooperation through support for cultural and artistic projects jointly implemented by diplomatic missions and cultural institutes of both countries in close cooperation with local partners.

In addition, the project has been recognized by numerous partners in the country and abroad: the general sponsor of the project is the company Digital Arrow from Novi Sad, and local companies also participate in the realization as prominent sponsors Two Desperados and 3lateral as part of Epic GamesUbisoft Belgrade is also one of the sponsors. Renowned organizations from Germany (accelerator Spielfabrique) and France (higher education institution for Video Games and Interactive Digital Media Cnam-ENJMIN) and their lecturers are also involved in the realization of the project.
