Finale Playing Narratives 2023.

The third generation of young creatives will present their concepts for video games, after eight months of working together. Come and support them! We look forward to meeting the future creators of successful games in Serbia. Part of the program is a lecture by Julia Makivic, a professor at the University of the Arts in London.

This year, the Association of Video Games Industry of Serbia and partners organized an eight-month program during which 35 young artists (who deal with creative writing, 2D and 3D art, sound design and animation) learn how to make video games. During these eight months, numerous lectures, practical exercises and visits to studios introduced them to the video game industry, and with the professional support of mentors, they developed concepts for their first projects. This event is the very end of their work. Six teams will present their projects live in front of an international jury.

In addition to the presentations, visitors will have the opportunity to hear the lecture Alternative Ways of Making Games: Designing Alternative Controllers (Alt-Ctrl) for Video Games, which will be given by special guest and member of the jury, Julia Makivic, lecturer at the University of the Arts in London. This presentation will provide an overview of the history of video games with alternative controllers and how they represent an alternative to the mainstream gaming industry. It covers the different types of alt-ctrl games, how you can make them, and how they can provide an extra layer of narrative meaning to games. After that, the artist will demonstrate some of her projects.

This program is organized and managed by SGA (Serbian Games Association), but it would not be possible without the support of the RECONOMY project, as well as dedicated partners from the industry – the company 3Lateral / Epic Games, Ubisoft Belgrade, and Two Desperados. In addition to these, the platform the A Maze festival also participated in the project, as well as the Goethe-Institut and the French Institute in Serbia.

RECONOMY is a regional inclusive and green economic development program of the Swedish Development Agency Sida, which is implemented by HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation, in cooperation with the organization Help – Hilfe zir Selbsthilfe e.V. and other partners in the countries of the Western Balkans and the Eastern Partnership.

About the lecturer

I am a game designer and creative technologist who divides her time between London and Belgrade. I create web-based narrative games and alternative controller games using Raspberry Pi, Arduino and various sensors. My games explore what it means to have an emotional exchange with a computational system and how our emotions are mediated by technology. I graduated with a degree in Media Arts and Sciences from Wellesley College in 2015 and completed an MFA in Computational Arts from Goldsmiths College in 2019. I have been working as a freelance creative technologist over the past two years, helping artists integrate interactivity and technology into their work. My projects have been featured in a variety of international games festivals including the Open Screens room at A MAZE, Game Happens, Interactive Futures, and the Leftfield Collection at EGX Rezzed.
